Licensure

Overview  |  Requirements  |  Coursework 

Building Level Administrator License: This program prepares individuals for K-12 building level leadership positions such as principal or assistant principal. Licensure candidates must:

  1. Hold a masters degree
  2. Hold a proficient or accomplished practitioner license, or a valid equivalent out-of-state license
  3. Complete the 24 credit hour program including the A695 practicum course (A minimum of 18 credits must be earned through IU-Bloomington or IUPUI)
  4. Maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 in all licensure coursework taken at Indiana University.
  5. Achieve a qualifying score on the ETS School Leaders Licensure Assessment. Please see the ETS webpage for more information.
  6. To become eligible for a five-year Proficient Practitioner license, the Indiana Professional Standards Board requires candidates to complete an induction program during their first two years of service as an administrator.

Please Note: The BLA licensure coursework encompasses 24 of the 36 credit hours required for a Masters of Science in Educational Leadership. It is possible to take all principal licensure courses online, please contact Cindy Wedemeyer at cwedemey@indiana.edu.

Director of Exceptional Needs License: This program prepares candidates for leadership roles in the area of exceptional needs at the school and district level. Licensure candidates must:

  1. Hold a master's degree in special education, communication disorders, or school psychology
  2. Have at least two years of full-time teaching experience
  3. Complete the program coursework including 18 hours in educational leadership, 3 hours in program evaluation and assessment, and 8-12 hours in special education. Candidates from school psychology and communication disorders majors will require 12 credit hours of special education course work. Special education majors will require 8 credit hours of special education course work.

Superintendent License: This 36 hour program prepares individuals for district level leadership positions including, but not limited to the superintendent. Those licensed may also serve as building-level administrators in schools serving those grades in which he or she has at least three years of teaching experience. Licensure candidates must:

  1. Hold a proficient practitioners license
  2. Earn an Ed.S. or Ed.D. degree*
  3. Complete the 36 hour program.
